The sequel to the ever-popular Rock Band is slated to come out this September, according to an IGN interview with the developers. This announcement has been  made official.
The set list has not been released but what we do know is that we will be able to use our DLC from Rock Band, which is great news. Now I just hope we don’t have to buy new instruments.

Since both of these stories involve individuals who are in the legal profession, I decided to combine this into one story.

Basically, the long and short of it is that Jack Thompson, renouned critic of video games, especially the GTA series, stormed out of court the other day after the Florida Bar recommended in the Miami-Dade court that Thompson be barred from practicing law in the state of Florida for the next ten years! Thompson threw a bit of a fit and stormed out. This is great news for gamers and the game industry, as frivolous law suits can finally be put aside, at least for the next decade.

Meanwhile, ex-Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, age 78, is headlining a project to create a free web-based game called “Our Courts.” The game’s purpose is to teach children/gamers/gamerchildren how our legal system works. The game will be free and will be ready by September ‘09. One scenario in the game includes a situation in a school where a student is asked to remove a shirt with a controversial slogan on it, which is meant to teach about the 1st amendment.

To me, this is great news, and I am giving mad props to our ex-justice, Sandra. This proves that just because someone is not a gamer does not mean that they can not break into the medium. This is a great way to show politicians and lawyers everywhere (cough*Jack Thompson*cough) that anyone can get into gaming at any time in their lives, and can make a positive change in the world while doing so. Even though this game probably won’t be anything great, it’s still a step in a new direction, and I always welcome change when it is for the betterment of society or the industry.

And rumored to star Bruce Willis as Kane and Billy Bob Thornton as Lynch. Right now it’s a bit of speculation and rumors flying all around the interwebz, but more developments are inevitable. From what I have heard, Bruce Willis is already undergoing contract negotiations for the film.

Hopefully this will turn out well. I played the game and liked the story but wasn’t a fan of the gameplay. Let’s just hope Uwe Boll doesn’t get wind of this.

Like any red-blooded American teenager, John Tyler Hammons digs rock music, fast cars, video games and…fiscal planning?

Apparently so. The AP reports that the University of Oklahoma freshman trounced 70 year-old Hershel McBride to become the mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, making it the first city in the nation to be governed by a self-admitted gamer.

But while he could own any of his peers at Halo 3, the fresh-faced leader is turning his sights on cleaning up the town’s politics by establishing an independent ethics commission and locking down campaign finance reporting.

“I’m sure the (city) council will work with me on these issues,” he said. “I campaigned on this, and this is something I intend to push.”

Tired of the same old political shenanigans, the townsfolk are backing their new man.

“He doesn’t have the baggage. He doesn’t owe anybody anything,” said cafe owner Gary Armstrong. “It’s sort of a fresh start for Muskogee.”

Best known as the subject of country legend Merle Haggard’s 1969 hit “Okie from Muskogee,” the unassuming city of 38,000 is considered the archetype of virtuous, small town America, a “place where even squares can have a ball.”

And now, so can gamers.

Gore Verbinski, the acclaimed director of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and The Ring, has signed on to direct the upcoming Bioshock film. Gore says that he feels that the story in Bioshock is dark and intimate, and he is more than ready to take on the job. I can’t wait for this movie, as it seems we might actually get a very exciting game-to-movie adaptation.

There will be more news on this as it is released. Just keep your eyes open until then!
