Codemasters just officially announced that their upcoming racing game (once referred to as Race Driver One) will be ready for a mid 2008 release and it’s going to be called GRID.
GRID is currently being worked on by Codemasters’ DiRT team and aims at being all about racing with no busy car work. You know, just straight up racing. GRID will dabble in the somewhat standard list of locals around the world including Washington DC, Pagani and Japan’s ever popular drift racing circuit. The game’s early visuals look solid enough and it does have the DiRT team’s pedigree behind it, so it’s quite possible GRID could be something worthwhile. But we’ll just have to sit back and see if game’s visuals impress, if the gameplay is there and if it can bring something unique to the racing genre sometime next year.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has a dream, a dream of $199 Xbox 360s and PS3s. Actually, more to the point, Kotick has stated that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 must fall to $199 within the next two years in order to gain acceptance from the mass market. Driving this opinion is none other than Nintendo’s Wii, which is priced at $250 and is, according to Kotick, “setting a standard and an expectation.” Kotick acknowledges that the Wii isn’t as complex as the 360 or PS3, but notes that that such things don’t matter to the average consumer. He concludes that the magical mass market price point is $199 and that console manufacturers will need to reach that price within the next two years, adding that the Wii will likely hit $129 within a few years.
We have to agree with Joystiq that a $199 PS3 seems pretty damned far-fetched, but the 360 might be able to accomplish such a feat. Within two years, we’re betting on $229 with a drop to $249 preceding that. Come back in two years to see if we’re right, assuming we’re not all destroyed by the impending Robocalypse by then.
GripShift’s pretty fun. Which explains why it’s gone from PSP to PlayStation 3 Network and now all the way over to Xbox Live Arcade. Developers Sidhe Interactive have announced that the downloadable racer will be made available on 360 sometime in December, though a firm date and price are still undecided. 360 fans worrying over the quality of a game that’s been double-ported, relax: Sidhe claim it’s the “definitive” version of the title. Until it’s ported to the Wii and/or PC. That one will be more definitiver.
Activision had originally forecast that it’d be making $1.050 billion in total revenue this Christmas season. Not anymore. No, as the realisation dawned on them that Guitar Hero III and Call of Duty 4 are conjuring money, they’ve bumped that estimate up to $1.225 billion. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:
“We are well on our way to delivering our 16th consecutive year of revenue growth and the most profitable year in our history. We are confident that the third quarter of fiscal 2008 will be the largest and most profitable quarter ever.”
What you are looking at here is an image that will be accompanying news stories, getting plastered all over video game retailers, and featured on posters and magazine ads from here until the next Grand Theft Auto game pops up. This is the official cover art for GTA IV, unveiled today on Rockstar’s official GTA IV web page. Snipers, cornrows, cellphones, copters, and the obligatory hot girl, complete with suggestive lollipop licking. A video of the cover reveal is available on the site, which loads with a splash page promising a third trailer for the game on December 6th at 3pm Eastern.

Among the new Fall Update features is new dashboard navigation (applause!). The 360’s “Game” blade is seeing a mini-reworking removing the “Xbox Live Arcade” option and replacing it with “Game Library”. Under the new “Game Library” option you’ll be able to navigate all your XBLA games, demos and recently played games in “twist” navigation. If you aren’t familiar, the twist navigation scheme can be seen on the current Video Marketplace (or in the screenshot above) and is basically horizontal scrolling that breaks down content by genre, categories, etc. And you better get used to the twisting scheme, because it’ll be the navigation method of choice, especially in the XBLM.
Speaking of the Marketplace, it too will see a makeover with the top level’s options being narrowed down to “Recommended Content”, “What’s New”, “Game Store”, and “Video Store”. Under those categories, navigation of the XBLM will be laid out in the new twist format accordingly. See, twisting is all the rage!
Finally, two other features will go live when the Fall Update gets released including a new “Personal Profile” section. This new section will be viewable on a person’s gamercard and will allow approximately 500-1000 text characters to write a mini-biography, favorite links or anything a person chooses. It’s very MySpace-esque and is aimed at going hand-in-hand with the new Friends of Friends feature. And the very last (and possibly most exciting) feature that’ll be coming next week is the ability to delete XBLA demos off of your games played list. W00t! We’re not sure if it’ll be a network wide deletion or if you’ll have to select each demo to remove, but it’s coming and we know a LOT of gamers wanted to erase those nasty XBLA demos from their games played history.
That’s about it for new Fall Update features and if you’re the adventurous type, make the jump to either Impress or Famitsu to read about their Fall Update experiences. That is, if you have the ability to read Japanese.
